Mental Health Coverage – A New Trend in Health Insurance Coverage

Mental health issues have long been a part of the medical care community as they strive to treat patients and get the mental health care that is needed. This type of coverage under healthcare plans was not even an option until as recently as in the past decade. Before that, any health insurance claims made for the treatment of mental health issues were denied. Nowadays that has changed, for most states demand that health insurance companies provide some sort of mental health coverage in their plans.

Most health insurance plans now will readily cover treatments needed for these issues such as anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder and the list goes on. While there are often restrictions, as plans always have in any medical care situation, many basic treatment plans and prescriptions are somewhat covered under mental health coverage. Most health insurance companies will allow a set number of sessions per year with a mental health professional such as a counselor or psychiatrist. Sometimes more sessions can be covered by request, if the insured person jumps through the necessary hoops of providing paperwork and referrals and the like.

This coverage has made great strides in recent years but there is still plenty of room for improvement. To obtain coverage for quality counseling sessions, sometimes a patient has to go through an inordinate amount of phone calls and paperwork, telling their private information to a myriad number of impersonal voices before they can get mental health coverage for the counseling they need. This makes the entire situation stressful and invasive to the patient. That being said, health insurance plans do have provisions for many mental health issues. Sometimes this will even include treatment for substance abuse problems, with restrictions of course.

Health insurance with this coverage is important to have in order to provide the best level of care possible for the insured and/or their family members. These issues can be as debilitating and life changing as physical issues and often do include numerous physical symptoms that manifest as well. This special coverage brings quality care and peace of mind to the insured and the family members involved. Nobody needs to suffer lack of quality care in this day and age, whether it is health care or physical illness or disease, or both. Insurance that provides this coverage can see that the proper care is provided.
